CPAWS Manitoba recently hosted a group of grade seven students from Amber Trails School on a field trip to Assiniboine Forest where they learned about the importance of protecting our parks and wild spaces.
The students examined the biodiversity of a tall grass ecosystem using quadrants, learned how to identify trees and determine their age, and discussed the role of native plants. The highlight of the day was the appearance of a deer which stayed with the class for some time.
Back in the classroom, we completed the program with further discussions on the importance of conserving natural spaces like the Assiniboine Forest and students planned their own action projects using what they learned.
The projects range from poster and Power Point presentations to song writing. Their projects were presented to the entire class in June.
