Woodland caribou are year-round inhabitants of the boreal forest. While the challenges to conserving this threatened species are appreciable, woodland caribou are valued as an indicator of intact boreal forest.
Indeed, because of their need for large tracts of undisturbed forest, measures to protect them are certain to enhance the conservation of many other species. Caribou are also important culturally, socially and spiritually to many aboriginal peoples who live in Canada’s boreal forest.
